WHY PLAY DIDGERIDOO?

Playing to teach

I always find it quite surprising to discover how many closet didgeridoo players there are out there. To me, it seems that a lot of people either have a didgeridoo leaning up somewhere in a corner of their house, or knows somebody who has a didgeridoo leaning up somewhere in a corner of their house.

The didgeridoo's recognition as a uniquely Australian instrument, its uniqueness and versatility, and the age of international travel has meant that the didgeridoo has reached into many homes worldwide. On my last holiday to Canada, I followed a man out through the airport in Toronto who had brought a didgeridoo home from Australia, much to the bemusement of customs officials.

Once people have a didgeridoo, the story goes that while playing the didgeridoo seemed like a great idea at first, learning how to do it is an entirely different matter. After a few disheartening attempts at circular breathing and attempting to get some different sounds, without some proper guidance and encouragement most people’s dreams of learning to play the didgeridoo end up falling far short of expectations.

These dreams often fall short because, quite surprisingly, there are very few teachers out there available. Teachers are good for providing the inspiration and encouragement needed to improve skills and also to keep practicing. Without the motivation to practice, it is very hard to learn to play didgeridoo.

While the internet has some good information available, the availability of teachers is very scarce. Finding someone offering their services to teach wherever you are is very hard to find. This is where you come in! When you reach a certain level of proficiency with the didgeridoo, you may find that teaching others how to play offers yet another rewarding experience you can have with this instrument.

If you are at a level good enough to offer some sound advice on circular breathing and the essentials of didgeridoo playing, as shown on this web site, you may find there are a few teaching opportunities out there.
